Common employer questions
How are they funded?
Funding apprenticeships can go one of two ways, either through Co-Investment or Levy Contributions.
Levy contribution
(Payroll bill over £3m)
The Apprenticeship Levy is a payroll tax on large employers, which is used to fund apprenticeship training. Employers with an annual wage bill over £3 million contribute 0.5% of their payroll into the levy pot. If you are one of these businesses, you can then use these funds, plus a government top-up, to cover the costs of training apprentices within your organisation.
Co-investment
(Payroll bill under £3m)
Co-investment refers to the funding arrangement for smaller employers who are not subject to the Apprenticeship Levy. These employers share the cost of apprenticeship training with the UK government. The employer pays 5% of the training costs, and the government covers the remaining 95%. This co-investment model enables a wider range of businesses to access apprenticeship programs.

** If you hire
- A 16 to 21 year old;
- Or a 19 to 24-year-old with an education, health and care plan provided by their local authority or has been in the care of their local authority.
Additionally, if you take on an apprentice who is between 16 – 18 years old, you’ll be eligible for a £1,000 cash incentive.
“How does the process work?”
“What sort of candidates can I hire?”
It’s a common misconception that apprentices are all 16-year-olds straight out of school.
The reality is that as long as an individual is 16 years old or older, lives in the UK, and has the right to work in the UK, we’re likely able to enrol them on the apprenticeship.
This means that you’ll have access to a huge pool of potential talent including college completers, graduates, and those looking to retrain.
“How long will the process take?”
Typically, the candidate sourcing process will take 1 – 2 weeks.
The signup process will take between 2 – 3 hours and can be split up across a working week.
On average, our clients start the process and send an offer within 4 – 6 weeks.
“What will I have to do?”
Exactly the same as if you were hiring a regular employee.
People think that apprentices require hours upon hours of development and support over regular employees. But, what a lot of people forget is that we’re here to help you with all of this as well.
The truth is, within three months you won’t even be able to tell the difference between your apprentice and the other members of your team.
“How much should I pay them?”
This is the age-old question.
Full-time apprentices (40 hours per week) can be paid £13,312pa in their first year. However, we advise a starting salary of between £16,000 – £20,000 depending on a variety of factors.
But don’t worry, we can discuss this with you on a call.
“What if something goes wrong?”
Don’t worry, you’re not tied into any contracts.
If something goes wrong during the apprenticeship, just follow your regular procedure and we’ll work with you to resolve any issues.
If it just doesn’t work out, you’re not obligated to keep your apprentice on the books.
